The International Living Future Institute (ILFI) has established the Living Building Challenge, the world’s most demanding performance standard for buildings. The ILFI’s Declare program focuses on product ingredient transparency, aiming to promote a healthier, more sustainable building market.

Declare functions like a “nutrition label” for building materials, detailing where a product originates, what it’s made of, and its end-of-life destination. There are 3 levels of declaration: Declare, LBC Compliant, and LBC Red List Free. The Red List Free designation is the strictest, requiring full ingredient disclosure, with no materials listed on the Living Building Challenge Red List.
